Susannah Douglas works predominantly with drawing. Her practice focuses on the representation of the human figure and the ways in which established conventions can simultaneously aspire to the unique and promote the generic. Drawing on a range of sources—including art historical imagery, anonymous photographs found online and found images—Douglas splices together fragments that are examined, repeated and reconstructed. Through this process, poses, gestures, clothing and compositions are reconfigured to reflect upon themselves, exploring ideas of identity, memory and representation.
Douglas completed an MA in Fine Art at Wimbledon College of Art, London, in 2010, following a BA (Hons) in Fine Art from Falmouth College of Art, Cornwall, in 2003. Her work has been exhibited widely in the UK and internationally, including at the Jerwood Drawing Prize, Jerwood Space, London; Contemporary Drawings from Britain, Museum of Xi'An, China; The Future Can Wait, London; Supermarket, Stockholm; and exhibitions with Charlie Smith Gallery, London, and Paper Gallery, Manchester. She was awarded the Discerning Eye Drawing Bursary in 2017.
Untitled is from a series of 12 × 12 cm aluminium panels painted from images of summer holidays. Some are based on stills taken from anonymous YouTube videos, others on found images or the artist's own family photographs. Together they form an archive of nostalgia, both real and imagined.
