Rachel Ross is an artist whose paintings explore the emotional resonance of ordinary possessions and the meanings they accumulate through use, memory and time. Her subjects — worn, handled and quietly familiar — range from treasured belongings to overlooked everyday objects, each carrying traces of personal history. Through carefully considered compositions, Ross elevates these seemingly mundane items, allowing memories and emotions to gather around them and transforming still life into something psychologically charged and deeply reflective.
Her work is grounded in an appreciation of the objects themselves — their form, colour and patina — while also examining what they may represent to both artist and viewer. By arranging subjects with precision and sensitivity, Ross creates paintings that balance intimacy with ambiguity, inviting viewers to project their own narratives onto the scenes.
Ross studied for a BA (Hons) in Illustration at Central Saint Martins between 1984 and 1987.
Recent exhibitions include New Work at Beaux Arts (2025); Subjects of Reflection at Open Eye Gallery (2025); Scottish Show 2025 at Panter and Hall Gallery; Family Silver at Panter and Hall Gallery (2024); and Scottish Show 2024 at Panter and Hall Gallery.
In 2012, Ross was runner-up in the Lynn Painter-Stainers Prize exhibition, and in 2010 received the Art Exposure Gallery Award at the Royal Glasgow Institute Annual Exhibition. Her work is held in the Walter Scott Art Collection.
