Nick Grindrod is a British artist based in Sheffield. Working in an abstract visual language, his paintings layer strict geometric structures with instinctive, gestural mark-making, balancing precision with spontaneity. Bold colour fields sit alongside distressed surfaces, while sharp lines collide with energetic brushwork to create compositions that pulse with movement and intensity.
Grindrod’s process is rooted in immediacy. Initial sketches are adapted and reformed through fast, instinctive bursts of activity, with much of the decision-making taking place directly on the surface of the painting. Erasure and removal are as significant as application, leaving traces of revision and hesitation visible within the finished works. Although the paintings often appear playful and graphic, they are underpinned by a rigorous commitment to process, composition, and material balance.
He studied Fine Art at the University of Derby (1995–1996), following studies at Sheffield College (1991–1994).
Recent solo exhibitions include Variations on a Theme at Art Works Singapore (2025); Every Which Way at Jonathan Levine Projects (digital exhibition, 2024); Slide at Maddox Gallery, Gstaad (2023–2024); STRATA curated by Smithson Gallery, London (2022); Nothing to See Here at The Circle Gallery, Sheffield (2018); and Aggressive Passive curated by Wilderness Projects, London (2018).
