Maisie Cowell (b. 1998) is a London-based multidisciplinary artist and illustrator. Her practice explores tragicomic narratives of human relationships, unfolding across surreal, psychologically charged landscapes. Working primarily with acrylic paint and Risograph printing, Cowell combines humour, vulnerability, and distortion to create scenes that feel both intimate and uncanny.
Alongside her studio practice, she is known for her commercial illustration and comic work, which has been featured in publications including The New Yorker and It’s Nice That. She is also co-editor of Partners, a biannual independent literature and illustration magazine.
Cowell completed a Foundation Diploma in Art and Design at Kingston University, London (2016–2017), before graduating with a BA in Illustration from the University of Brighton (2017–2020).
Recent exhibitions include New Faces: Wieden+Kennedy x It’s Nice That in London (2023); Frame at Family Store Gallery, Brighton (2023); Murmuration at Cromwell Place, London (2024); A Single Tree Doesn’t Make a Forest at Kindred, London (2024); Twilight Barking at The Turner House Gallery, Cardiff (2024); Partners at Photobook Cafe Gallery, London (2024); and Partners II at Photobook Cafe Gallery, London (2025).
