Kate Sherman is a British painter whose work explores memory, distance and emotional connection through landscape painting. Working from photographic sources, Sherman creates paintings that examine the space between lived experience and recollection, capturing the tension between the immediacy of a place and the reflective nature of memory.
Photography plays a central role in her practice, not simply as documentation but as a mediator between reality and longing. Her paintings often evoke a quiet emotional atmosphere, where landscapes appear filtered through time, perception and personal reflection. The resulting works suggest both intimacy and detachment, balancing observation with a sense of nostalgia and transience.
Sherman studied Fine Art at Birmingham between 1990 and 1993, graduating with a BA (Hons).
Recent exhibitions include Back To My Trees at Terrace Gallery (2025), Productive Land at Zimmer Stewart Gallery (2025), Tracing Space at Irving Gallery (2025), and a solo exhibition at Beaux Arts Bath in 2024. She has also exhibited in the Royal Academy Summer Exhibition (2024), the ING Discerning Eye (2023), and group exhibitions at venues including Glyndebourne Opera House and Cavaliero Finn, London.
