Duncan Shoosmith is a Wiltshire-based artist whose practice centres on portraiture and figurative painting. His work has been recognised for its sensitive observation and strong painterly presence, earning selection for major portrait exhibitions and contemporary painting prizes over several decades.
Shoosmith first gained national recognition by being included in the BP Portrait Award exhibitions in 1997 and 1998 at the National Portrait Gallery. More recently, his work has been exhibited in the annual exhibitions of Contemporary British Portrait Painters between 2020 and 2025 at The Department Store, and in the British Art Prize exhibition in 2024.
In 2019, Shoosmith was selected for Sky Arts Portrait Artist of the Year, and in 2024 received the Raw Umber Studios Portrait Prize as part of the British Art Prize.
His work is held in collections including The Jazz Centre UK and the National Museum of Wales.
