About The Artist

Georgie Huxley is a London-based painter exploring the tension between connection and solitude. Rooted in emotional memory, her work captures overlooked moments, anchored by found fragments.

Through layered mark-making and tonal subtlety, she creates liminal spaces where presence and absence blur, reflecting the balance between feeling both infinitesimally small yet simultaneously very significant.

Huxley completed a BA in Fine Art at The Slade School of Fine Art, London, from 2019 to 2023, following a Diploma in Art and Design at Warwickshire College, Leamington Spa, in 2018–2019.

Since 2016, I’ve gathered over 700 strangers’ shopping lists from city pavements, empty trolleys and supermarket aisles. Until now, they have sat untouched in my studio. I’ve always been drawn to these forgotten fragments of daily life, accidental self-portraits and small confessions of what we need and desire. Through this collection, I’ve built a body of work exploring the permanence of these fleeting cultural artefacts.

Each list sits somewhere between intimate and anonymous; it’s as much about what’s missing as what’s written. In painting them, I’m interested in what happens when something so temporary is slowed down, when a quick scribble becomes something lasting. The act of painting handwriting feels personal yet distant, it’s like retracing someone else’s thoughts while I quietly add my own. That tension between intimacy and distance, permanence and loss, reflects how we can feel deeply significant in one moment and utterly unimportant in the next.

Honest, human and made without performance or pretence, these lists were never meant to exist beyond the weekly shop. Through paint, I try to preserve that honesty, staying true to their original form. Ultimately, I hope to make you pause and notice the beauty in what’s left behind and overlooked, and perhaps recognise something of yourself in it too.
