Ruth Heaton explores painting as an expanded practice informed by architectural structures, interior design, personal memorabilia, and objects drawn from domestic, decorative, and popular culture. Working across wall, floor, and plinth-based formats, she paints on a variety of substrates including wood, MDF, concrete, and metal, reflecting her ongoing interest in the built environment and the relationship between design, spatiality, and perception.

Geometry and perspective are central to Heaton’s practice. Through repetition, symmetry, and the rhythm of line, her works create movement and spatial tension, often blurring distinctions between painting, object, and installation. Her use of materials associated with construction and interiors reinforces the physical presence of the work while drawing attention to the ways environments shape memory, behaviour, and emotional experience.

Heaton completed an MFA in Fine Art with distinction at West Dean College of Arts and Conservation and the University of Sussex (2020–2022), following a Graduate Diploma in Fine Art at the same institutions (2019–2020). She also holds a Diploma in Art and Contemporary Crafts with distinction from West Dean College (2017–2019), alongside earlier qualifications in teaching, counselling, forensic care, and healthcare studies.

Recent solo exhibitions include Cathedral at Prosaic 97 Projects Gallery, Sheffield (2025); short to the eye, long in the mind at Redcar Contemporary Art Gallery (2024); A Better Sky at West Dean House, West Sussex (2022); and Triangulation and Black Spring at West Dean House (2021).

Selected group exhibitions include First Round Proper at Bloc Projects, Sheffield (2026); This Year’s Model at Studio 1.1, London (2026); Art on a Postcard at the Bomb Factory Art Foundation, London (2025); Beep Painting Prize at Elysium Gallery, Swansea (2024); Ty Pawb Gallery Biennial, Wrexham (2024); and Anyday Now at Copeland Gallery, London (2022).

In 2025, Heaton received the Judges Winner’s Prize at the Tarpey Gallery.
