John Simpson is an artist based in Bath, UK, whose practice centres on painting and printmaking. Often combining paint with prints made from found or recycled natural materials, he extends the possibilities of mark-making through experimental processes that fuse material, image, and meaning.
Simpson’s work explores humanity’s relationship with the natural world, seeking to move beyond dominant extraction-based ways of thinking towards a more ecocentric understanding of environment and interconnectedness. By incorporating organic matter and repurposed materials into his process, the works become both representations of nature and physical traces of it. Through this merging of medium and subject, his practice examines cycles of growth, decay, transformation, and ecological coexistence.
He completed a BA (Hons) in Printmaking at Cambridge School of Art, UK (1995–1998).
Recent exhibitions include the Woolwich Contemporary Print Fair at Woolwich Works, London (2025); the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition, London (2023 & 2024); the Contemporary Printmaking Prize at Fen Ditton Gallery, Cambridge (2023); The Museum as Ecosystem for Tate Exchange at Tate Modern, London (2019); Mitosis for Tate Exchange at Tate Modern (2018); The Biological Landscape at The Exhibitionist, London (solo, 2018); Symbiotic Drawing for Tate Exchange at Tate Modern (2017); a solo exhibition at Beverly Hills Gallery, Los Angeles (2013); John Simpson New Work at O Contemporary, Soho, London (solo, 2008); and a solo exhibition at Galeria Choque Cultural, São Paulo (2008).
