Céline Bodin is a French photographer whose work investigates gender, identity and the cultural construction of femininity within Western society. Through carefully staged and psychologically charged imagery, Bodin explores portraiture as a site of ambiguity, questioning how identities are formed, performed and perceived.
Her practice examines the visual codes and rituals surrounding womanhood, engaging with themes including beauty standards, social expectation, religion, art history and the fragmentation of the female body. Drawing from both historical and contemporary representations of women, Bodin’s photographs challenge fixed notions of femininity while revealing the tensions between empowerment, objectification and self-construction.
Bodin studied Photography at Gobelins l'École de l'Image before completing an MA in Photography at the London College of Communication in 2013.
Her work has been exhibited internationally in galleries, museums and major photography fairs. Selected exhibitions include PHOTO – ART – PHOTO from Julia Margaret Cameron to Thomas Ruff at the Clemens Sels Museum (2024), Divine Narratives at Purdy Hicks Gallery (2023), Paris Photo at the Grand Palais (2022), and Light of Grace, a solo exhibition at Purdy Hicks Gallery (2019). She has also exhibited regularly at Photo London, the London Art Fair and the ING Discerning Eye exhibition.
Bodin’s photographs combine theatricality, symbolism and meticulous composition to interrogate how femininity is constructed and consumed, positioning the female figure as both subject and site of cultural projection.
