Carol Robertson is a Scottish abstract painter whose practice is rooted in geometric and reductive abstraction, particularly the repeated use of the circle. Her work explores the essential qualities of form, colour and rhythm, using geometry as a means of stripping away excess and focusing on clarity and sensation. While non-figurative, her paintings remain closely connected to lived experience, drawing subtle associations with landscape, skyscape, architecture, nature and the environment.

Colour is central to Robertson’s practice and functions as an emotional and sensory language within the work. Much like music, it becomes a direct conduit for mood, atmosphere and feeling. Through carefully balanced compositions and nuanced tonal relationships, her paintings create meditative spaces that encourage slow looking and contemplation.

Robertson studied Fine Art between 1974 and 1978 before completing an MA in Fine Art at the Chelsea School of Art between 1980 and 1981.

Selected solo exhibitions include Garden Project at Kunstgarten and Colour Stream at Flowers Gallery (2012); Circular Stories at Flowers East (2014); Pointstar at Flowers Central (2017); Mind’s Eye at Flowers Gallery (2021); and Luna & Astral Variation at Flowers Gallery (2022). Recent collaborative exhibitions with Trevor Sutton include CIRCUS at The Revelator (2024), Heaven Earth and Human Beings at Grey Gallery (2024), and TEN at Zembla Gallery (2025).

Her work has been widely exhibited in group exhibitions internationally, including multiple presentations at the Royal Academy of Arts Summer Exhibition (2021, 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025), as well as exhibitions in Germany, Sweden, Ireland, France and the Netherlands.

Robertson has received numerous awards and fellowships throughout her career, including the Singer & Friedlander / Sunday Times Watercolour Competition First Prize (2005), Third Prize (2003), the Boise Scholarship to Italy (1981–82), the Edwin Austin Abbey Memorial Award at the British School at Rome (1993), and the Evolver Prize at the Royal West of England Academy Autumn Exhibition (2022). She has also been a returning Ballinglen Fellow at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation since 2001 and was elected a Royal West of England Academician in 2018.

Her work is held in numerous public, corporate and private collections including the Arts Council England, Fitzwilliam Museum, Contemporary Art Society, Government Art Collection, Mondriaanhuis, Royal West of England Academy, and corporate collections including Goldman Sachs, Deutsche Bank and The Economist.
